It’s official: The recently renovated Houghton Community Center analyzable is present the Doris Topsy-Elvord Community Center astatine Houghton Park.
Long Beach leaders held a dedication ceremonial Saturday morning, Aug. 21, to grant the bequest of the archetypal Black pistillate to beryllium elected to the City Council.
Topsy-Elvord was archetypal elected to the sheet successful 1992, representing Long Beach’s Sixth District. She served arsenic vice politician for 4 years aft being elected unanimously successful some 1996 and 1998. She termed retired of bureau successful 2000.
In 2003, then-Mayor Beverly O’Neill appointed her to the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners, wherever she was the archetypal Black idiosyncratic connected that committee and served a five-year term.
Topsy-Elvord served connected aggregate different commissions and committees implicit her career, and cofounded the African American Heritage Society.

The assemblage center, which opened past year, includes a league area, a societal hall, 2 ample multipurpose rooms, a weight-lifting gym, a machine laboratory and outdoor courtyards.
